Freezing Rain
Freezing rain forms when there’s a wedge of warm air well above the ground. This warm air is thick, which allows the raindrop to survive until it comes into contact with the cold ground. This forms a coating of ice on the areas where the raindrops fall. This is dangerous because this creates a solid sheet of ice. This ice can then accumulate and cause damage.
Sleet
Sleet is similar to freezing rain because it also requires a wedge of warm air above the ground. Sleet forms when snowflakes melt into a raindrop because of that warm air. Unlike freezing rain, however, the raindrops refreeze in a layer of freezing air just above the surface. This creates frozen raindrops or small ice pellets. Snow
Precipitation falls in the form of snow when the temperature between the clouds and ground remains at or below the freezing mark. When the surface temperature is near or just above 32 degrees, the snow tends to be wet and heavy. When the air is drier and colder, the snow tends to be dry and powdery. We suggest getting your roof cleared of snow after every six inches of rainfall.
